Psalms: Songs Of Ascent – Psalm 131
Join us for our Summer series “Psalms: Songs of Ascent.” This week we study a short song, Psalm 131, that is rich in meaning. Imagine a friend from out of town is visiting, and you offer to drive them somewhere you go often; what would your response be if they first ask you, “Are you sure you know how to get there?” or “Is this the best way to go?” You might be tempted to answer with pride, “Of course, I go there everyday” or “Well, I hope so, I go there so often I could get there in my sleep.” While a prideful answer might even sound funny, when we lack humility in our approach to any situation, we risk ruining the witness we should also be hoping to provide to everyone we come in contact with. It can also be tempting to be prideful in our online interaction, thinking that since we are believers, we have the right to hold a moral or ethical high ground that others clearly lack because they don’t “know God” like we do (in case you’re unclear, that “right” is not a thing). And that’s where the Psalmist meets us in 131: a virtual laying aside of our pride and boastfulness about what we THINK we know in exchange for the rest and peace that comes from being filled up with what God has given us and simply enjoying the shelter and comfort of His presence. Child-like faith, at the same time curious and trusting, teaches us much about our relationship with God. We do not, or should not, demand to understand in order to believe, but our belief can lead to whatever understanding God bestows on us as we seek to live lives that honor Him. Celebrate the Lord’s blessings and power with us on Sunday, and again we ask: what songs will God allow our hearts to sing when we put him first in all we do instead of as an afterthought when things don’t go quite the way we thought? Explore the scripture with us on Sunday, as we worship together through the Word, a message, music, giving, and fellowship. Come join us online or in person at 9:09 & 11:11am. #SongsOfAscent
